Last year's Derby winner LACCARIO had traveled to New York for an outing in last night's $250,000 G1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes at Belmont Park. And Gestüt Hof Ittlingen's four-year-old by SCALO completed the task with an excellent run that left him finishing in second place. LACCARIO enjoyed a quiet trip in the select field of seven under jockey Dylan Davis and proved wide awake around the final turn. While there was no stopping the repeat winner and four-time G1 winner Channel Maker, the colt called up his well-known speed and put himself on record as runner-up after 2400m.
In light of the difficult conditions prior to the race--delays, quarantine and time zone jumping--this was a phantastic effort by the colt, who was seemingly in his element and had fun in doing what he does best.
LACCARIO will remain in the US and soon move into a stall at Herringwell Stables to take up training with Graham Motion. |
